Emma C. Browning was an aviation pioneer in Texas and one of the few female professionals of her time. Getting her start in the industry with her husband, Robert Browning, together they managed Browning Aerial Services, a Fixed Airport Base at Robert Mueller Municipal Airport in Austin, Texas. While their business was focused on aircraft service, maintenance, storage, charters, flight instruction and sales, it was also used to train pilots for the U.S. Army Air Corps for World War II. During the Great Depression, Emma was a piggy-back pilot for her barnstorming husband, and they earned a living doing passenger hops, air shows, parachute jumps, and dead-stick landings. Until 1987, Emma oversaw the operations of Browning Aerial Services but still maintained a close relationship to all in the aviation industry. In 2005, Emma was inducted into the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame and named “Austin’s First Lady of Aviation.”
